Petrol is a mixture of hydrocarbons. C₅H₁₂ is one of the hydrocarbons in petrol. It burns in oxygen: C₅H₁₂ + 8O₂ → 5CO₂ + 6H₂O. The table shows bond energies (kJ/mol): C–H 413; C–C 347; O=O 498; C=O 743; O–H 467.
- aName one use of petrol. [1]
- bName the hydrocarbon with molecular formula C₅H₁₂. [1]
- cName the type of reaction that occurs. [1]
- dCalculate the total energy required to break all bonds in the reactants. [3]
- eCalculate the total energy released when all bonds are formed in the products. [2]
- fCalculate the total energy change, ΔH, for the reaction. [2]
- gDescribe an energy level diagram for the reaction, including the activation energy (draw it on paper). [4]
You'll mark your own answer against the marking guide when you hand it in.
