The diagram shows a tube with cotton wool soaked in hydrogen sulphide solution at one end and cotton wool soaked in sulphur dioxide solution at the other. The solutions release hydrogen sulphide gas, H₂S, and sulphur dioxide gas, SO₂. The two gases react to form a yellow powder: H₂S + SO₂ → S + H₂O.
- (a) Balance the equation and write the state symbols for all the substances. [2]
- (b) Calculate the relative molecular mass of hydrogen sulphide, H₂S. [Ar: H 1; S 32] [1]
- (c) Calculate the relative molecular mass of sulphur dioxide, SO₂. [Ar: S 32; O 16] [1]
- (d) At which point, X, Y or Z, will the yellow powder be formed? Explain your answer. [2]
- (e) Name the process being demonstrated by this experiment. [1]
- (f) Explain what would happen if the experiment was repeated at a slightly lower temperature. [2]
You'll mark your own answer against the marking guide when you hand it in.
